    ALBANY — State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa on Wednesday doubled down on her defense of a $155,000 pay raise she received over the past year that she said brought her salary in line with that of local superintendents and allows her to maintain two residences in New York.

    Rosa pointed to her dual role as commissioner of the State Education Department and as president of the University of the State of New York.

    As head of the sprawling education agency, Rosa is responsible for overseeing the administration of both K-12 education and collegiate education, as well as libraries and museums.

    Rosa also invoked the salary of a handful of local superintendents who often negotiate their own contracts and insisted that the state Board of Regents and other staff members at the education agency scrupulously followed the law when they conducted an exhaustive review last year of other comparable education officials' salaries before deciding to recommend an increase.
